Today marks the start of #HouseplantWeekUK (11th-17th January) which celebrates the best of indoor gardening as well as providing expert advice for the right plant for your home.
Indoor gardening has been growing more and more in popularity in recent years, but in particular in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, which at its peak, saw an 81.82% rise in garden centre houseplant sales in comparison to 2019 (Garden Centre Association, 2020). Another survey also found that the top non-essential purchase of 2020 was houseplants, with almost 1 in 5 people (18.5%) saying they bought a new plant during the pandemic (Blooming Artificial, 2020).
One of the most likely reasons for the increase in houseplant sales in 2020 is not only did they make our homes look great whilst we were spending more time indoors, but they also have a range of health benefits. Helping to lift our moods and improving the air we breathe are just some of the benefits of owning a houseplant.
